Current Bedside Reading

This page is to discuss what you are currently reading at the moment, and what books you have by your bedside that you intend to read in the future...

  1. I'm currently reading Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and I only have 40 pages left...not going to discuss what I think of it here as it's our book club choice for next month. After that I will be reading the Junior Officer's Reading Club (in a hurry as the meeting is next week!) and then A Conspiracy of Friends by my old favourite Alexander McCall Smith. Just in time for when I see him at the Hay Festival next month. Can't wait!

  2. I have nearly finished The Junior Officers' Reading Club - Patrick Hennessey which is this month's Reading Group choice, so, for the time being I will not make any comments.

On my bedside table sits an ever growing pile of books but I am looking forward to reading "Other People's Money" - Justin Cartwright -
A novel based on the current economic crisis. It is described as a Middlemarch of the British Banking Crisis.

Next up will be a book that I am looking forward to reading - "Please look after Mom" - Kyung-Sook Shin.

    Happy reading

  3. Having finished "Other People's Money" and "Please look after Mom" (which I thoroughly enjoyed, next on my table is "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" - John Boyne is a book that I have always wanted to read for some time and "Zoo Station" - David Downing a book that I discovered whilst searching for another one.

I would be interested to know if anyone has already read these books and would like to make a comment?

  4. Hi Mike I have read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and was thoroughly moved, particularly by the writing style, as it is from the point of view of a child who has a very limited understanding of what is going on. It is one of those books that completely breaks your heart, mainly through what is implied, as there is no explicit explanation of what is happening. I have also seen the film, and although the ending is slightly different, it does not, in my opinion disappoint.

  5. I really enjoyed The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas for exactly the same reasons as you have suggested. However, I wonder if a younger person, who, perhaps is not familiar with the holocaust etc would have got as much out of it as I did. If I had to score the book as one of our own reads, then I would have given it a 9/10. A book does not have to be long to be good.

  6. There are several books on my bedside table that I have recently read after last month’s disappointing Group read – The Junior Officer’s Reading Group. For a touch of light reading I have read Buried Prey – John Sandford which is no. 21 in the Lucas Davenport series of reads. If you are into books that feature serial killers, then John Sandford will not disappoint. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buried-Prey-John-Sandford/dp/0857205714/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307462875&sr=1-1
I have read and thoroughly enjoyed the Crying Tree – Naseem Rakha. This is one of the best books that I have read in 2011 which explores forgiving the unforgivable when a young boy is brutally murdered at home. But this is not the average run of the mill who-dunnit. A must read. You will not be disappointed! - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crying-Tree-Naseem-Rakha/dp/0330504800/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307463230&sr=1-1
Next is new author for me, Gordon Ferris and his latest book, The Hanging Shed. It’s about the main character, Brodie returning home from the war in 1946 and then tries to save his lifelong friend from the gallows. I shall certainly look out for more books by this author in the future. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hanging-Shed-Gordon-Ferris/dp/1848877684/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307464081&sr=1-2
The Lock Artist – Is an entertaining thriller by Steve Hamilton, who is yet another new author for me. The book itself was a page turner about a young boy who is an expert in picking locks. Whose talents do not go unnoticed by the criminal fraternity nor by the police? - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lock-Artist-Steve-Hamilton/dp/0752891960/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307464667&sr=1-1
I have today finished Never let me Go – Kazuo Ishiguro which is this month’s book choice that had a film tie in. I will save my comments on this book for our meeting - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Never-Let-Me-Kazuo-Ishiguro/dp/0571258093/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307464399&sr=1-1e c
Next up to read is the latest Steve Martini legal thriller Trader of Secrets. This book is no. 12 that features the character Paul Madriani. I can’t wait to start reading it - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trader-Secrets-Paul-Madriani-Novel/dp/0061930237/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307465234&sr=1-1

  7. Wow what a lot of reading! Sounds like you have found some good ones there. I would particularly like to read The Crying Tree when I get a chance, it sounds excellent.
By my bedside is Collected Poems by Christina Rosetti (purchased at the Hay Festival) and I am currently reading The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party By Alexander McCall Smith, which then takes me right up to date with the No. 1 detective series. I then hope to read The Crying Tree and also next months book club book. Sadly I think 2 books a month is my limit at the moment!
